What to Consider When Buying an MDR Cable

MDR, or mini delta ribbon, identifies a connector family used by multiple interface systems. An MDR cable may serve SCSI, data acquisition, motion control, machine vision, or proprietary I/O, so connector appearance cannot establish compatibility.

Your specification must connect the mechanical interface to the actual protocol and pinout documented by the equipment maker.

What to Consider When Buying an MDR Cable selection and compatibility diagram.

Identify the exact MDR connector

Count contacts and record gender, pitch family, keying, shell, and retention. Photograph the mating face and measure the port when the part number is unavailable. Do not substitute VHDCI or HPDB connectors because they look similarly dense.

Name the application

State whether the assembly carries SCSI, DAQ, servo signals, Camera Link, or another interface. For SCSI, compare the 68-pin SCSI cable range and VHDCI cable range. For internal routing, the SCSI ribbon cable range may be more relevant.

Control the pinout

Attach the equipment wiring diagram and specify the view orientation. Identify straight-through, crossover, breakout, grounds, shield bonds, power contacts, and intentional opens. Never copy a SCSI pinout into a DAQ or motion-control assembly solely because the connector count matches.

Match construction to use

Stationary cabinet wiring, repeated-flex robotics and external storage impose different conductor, shielding, jacket and strain-relief requirements. Describe bend radius, flex motion, noise sources, cable exit and connector clearance.

Approve before production

Provide BespokeCable with equipment models, photographs, drawings, length, environment, quantity, labeling, and test expectations. Start with the SCSI cable collection when SCSI is confirmed, then approve the final drawing and sample as the controlled reference.

MDR naming requires extra discipline

Suppliers may use MDR, mini ribbon, mini delta ribbon, and half-pitch terms inconsistently. Put the connector manufacturer’s series or a dimensioned mating-face drawing on the approved document whenever possible.

For 68-position products, explicitly distinguish MDR, HPDB68 and VHDCI68. Similar contact counts and dense shells do not establish mechanical compatibility.

Testing should follow the signal application

A continuity test can verify a static pin map, but it does not by itself qualify signal integrity, controlled impedance, skew, flex life, or environmental performance. Define only the tests required by the application and agree how results will be recorded.

For a breakout assembly, verify every leg and label against the drawing. For a straight cable, verify orientation and shield bonds as well as end-to-end continuity.

Before you finalize the cable

  • Confirm both connector faces, gender, keying, and retention hardware.
  • Confirm the equipment protocol, signaling mode, and approved pinout.
  • Check total bus topology, length, and the two termination endpoints.
  • Approve the drawing or verified sample before production or installation.

Next step

If you want BespokeCable to review an SCSI cable requirement, send the host and peripheral models, clear port photographs, required length, pinout or equipment manual, installation environment, and quantity. These details let us evaluate the requested assembly without guessing from a connector nickname.
