RS232 Cable Manufacturer

RS232 Cable

High-quality RS232 serial cables manufacturer for direct device-to-device communication.

Despite the rise of newer communication standards, RS232 remains a vital interface for countless industrial systems, medical devices, point-of-sale terminals, and legacy equipment. As a proven standard with decades of industry adoption, RS232 provides reliable point-to-point serial communication where simplicity and stability are paramount. Our RS232 cable solutions bridge the gap between modern computing platforms and these essential legacy systems.

We manufacture RS232 cables for professional applications where reliability cannot be compromised. Our product range includes both DB9 and DB25 connector configurations, available in straight-through and null-modem versions to meet your specific equipment requirements. The cables feature precision-machined connectors with gold-plated contacts to prevent corrosion and ensure stable electrical connections. High-quality shielding protects signal integrity in electrically noisy environments, while industrial-grade cable jackets provide durability against oils, chemicals, and physical wear.

Proper cable configuration is critical for IT managers and industrial engineers. Straight-through cables are used for DTE-to-DCE connections (such as computer-to-modem), while null-modem cables enable DTE-to-DTE communication (computer-to-computer). We provide clear labeling and documentation to help you select the correct cable type for your application, thereby avoiding connectivity issues caused by improper cable selection.

As a direct manufacturer, we offer bulk pricing for large-scale deployments and can provide custom solutions, including specific cable lengths, connector combinations, and specialized shielding requirements. Whether you’re maintaining existing infrastructure or integrating legacy equipment into new systems, our RS232 cables deliver the dependable performance that professional applications demand.

Straight-Through Cable and Null Modem Cable

The difference between a straight-through and a null modem cable is that the former has no connections reversed. Still, these cables generally connect devices with serial ports (e.g., a PC to a domestic router), so their pinouts reflect their intended use! A straight-through cable connects one device to another (DTE—Data Terminal Equipment and DCE—Data Circuit-terminating Equipment), such as a computer to a printer or modem. (Both devices expect the signal on specified pins.) A null modem cable connects the transmitter and receiver wires to make two devices (DTEs) appear as DCE devices; nothing more is needed for a direct serial connection.

Industrial Automation

Industrial Automation

In factory or industrial environments, RS232 cables provide a rugged, reliable communication link between PLC motor drives and various control devices. Although surpassed by Ethernet or USB interfaces in newer equipment, RS232 is still a key protocol, and equipment is used across a broad range of applications. A cable you can depend on is critical for programming, monitoring, and troubleshooting to keep your machine at its full potential.

Connector Type

Although the DB9 is the modern standard for RS-232, many devices with a serial port (e.g., modems) use a larger DE-9 connector that mixes in some signals from a parallel printer port. You first need to know what connector your gear uses. Adapter cables are available, but you want to make sure they use the correct straight-through (or null modem) wiring scheme internally as well.

Signal Control

Signal Control

In addition to TxD, RxD, and Ground, there are wires for hardware flow control (RTS and CTS). These signals enable a device to suspend data transmission when its buffer is full, preventing data loss. These connections are not included on cheaper serial cables as they are not required for lower-speed communication or with newer devices that don’t need handshaking.

High-Quality Shielding

Adequate cable shielding is necessary in electrically noisy locations such as industrial floors. Good RS232 cables shield their low-voltage serial signals with foil and braiding to protect them from EMI sources such as motors, drives, and power cables. This prevents data corruption and ensures a solid connection for the maximum reliable distance (usually 50 feet/15 meters).

What is the difference between a straight-through and a null-modem RS232 cable?

A straight-through cable has to connect its pins at one end to the opposite pair at the other (Pin 2 to Pin 3, Pin 4 to Pin 5). It links a computer (DTE) to a modem or printer (DCE). The null modem adapter has the send and receive lines crossed (pins 2 and 3) to allow a direct connection without an external data relay.

What type of RS-232 cable do I need for a Cisco console connection?

A Cisco console cable must connect the computer’s serial port to the console port on your Cisco router. That’s usually a DB9-RJ45 cable, with the RJ45 end going to the device’s console port and the DB9 end connecting to your PC’s serial port (or a USB-to-serial adapter).

What is the maximum length for an RS-232 cable?

The RS232 standard allows for a cable length of 50 feet (about 15 meters) at the baud rate of 9600. At lower baud rates, longer runs work but are subject to signal degradation. For longer distances, you may need to use RS422 or RS485, which offer better long-bus communication.

Can I use a DB25-to-DB9 adapter?

Yes, you can do this with a DB25-to-DB9 adapter. But it is crucial to have an adapter that physically configures the pins and maps/translates the pinouts in the required wiring (straight-through/null-modem) for your application. The adapter must correctly connect the TxD, Rx, D, and Ground pins.

Why isn't my RS232 connection working?

First, ensure the cable type on your devices (straight-through or null modem) is correct. Second, match your terminal software’s communication parameters (baud rate, data bits, stop bits, and parity) with your target devices’. The wrong Baud rate is the leading cause of failure.

Do all pins in an RS232 cable need to be connected?

No. Only three wires are required for standard communication: Transmit Data (TxD), Receive Data (RxD), and Signal Ground (GND). However, to avoid data loss and ensure stable operation, particularly at higher speeds, it is strongly recommended that a hardware flow control connection (RTS/CTS) be established.

Are RS232 and Serial cables the same thing?

A serial cable is an umbrella term for a solid-state serial communications standard, RS232. Although many people interchange the terms, other serial standards exist (like RS422 and RS485). When you buy a cable, specify it as RS232; otherwise, the voltage levels and pinout could differ.
