Challenge: Dynamic Cable Management for Aerial Shots with High-Resolution Monitors

A drone cinematography service specializing in FPV (First-Person View) and heavy-lift aerial filming faced a persistent operational challenge. There were extravagant rigs when information up-captured the gimbal and two on-board Atomos Ninja V​ for 8K camera HDMI output. Regular, straight cables would hang loose, get caught on the frame or landing gear as the drone was prepared for flight, and were prone to being yanked free during the heavy vibrations of takeoff and landing. This resulted in a momentary loss of the vital monitoring signal. The new cable solution had to be super flexible, adjustable in length to eliminate excess slack while maintaining a taut connection, and durable enough to withstand constant movement and vibration, all while ensuring an unblemished 8K signal​ for confidence monitoring.

After multiple evaluations, they implemented our Down Coiled HDMI Cable​ and Left Coiled HDMI to Micro HDMI Cable​ into their standard build. It was the coiled, or spring-like, design​ that set them apart:

• Manage Slack:​ The Spring HDMI Cable​ also posed the handling challenge of at-rest slack, which, in this case, can be tightly wound into a coil about 20cm long and held on the gimbal. As the monitor was put in place, the cable extended cleanly into position (out to ~70 cm) and remained taut (no perilous loops that could snag on hardware).
• Directional routing for clean builds: The Down Angle​ variant allowed the cable to exit the camera port and coil directly downward, following the gimbal’s arm nicely. The left-angle HDMI-to-Micro HDMI​ adapter worked well with the monitor’s L-shaped side port, keeping all cable runs flush.
• The signal integrity during movement: 8K@60Hz from the camera was rock-solid and free of EMI interference from the drone’s powerful electronic speed controllers (ESCs) and motors, thanks to its uncompromised coaxial internal construction​ and ​2.5mm ultra-soft TPE jacket. This flexibility allowed the cable to absorb vibrations rather than transmit them to the connector, thereby eliminating any disconnections.

Process Implementation and Impact on Workflow

The deployment was swift. We equipped each rig with the correct coiled cables. The pilots and camera operators noticed the difference right away. Gone were the days spent untangling and re-seating cables before a flight. But far more importantly, they also reported a complete elimination of in-flight monitor signal dropouts​ over six months attributed to physical cable problems. While on the road, you put the HDMI cable through its paces, but you have never had a failure with this spiral design. Having OEM capability at our factory made procurement simple for them, and they purchased an entire fleet of identical rigs.
