Design Features

The series of SFF-8654 cables is specifically designed for ultra-high-speed 24Gbps SAS 4.0 and NVMe connectivity. The foundation of the series is the small-form-factor SFF-8654 Slimline connector, released in both 4-lane (4i) and 8-lane (8i) varieties, enabling far higher port density than in preceding generations. These connectors sport a tough positive-click latching mechanism and are made with high-temperature LCP (Liquid Crystal Polymer) housings and gold-plated contacts for ideal signal integrity. This includes 4i/8i to 4x/8x SATA breakouts, SFF-8087/8639/8643/8482/8644 adapters, and direct SFF-8654 cables—fourteen configurations in total. The 8i-to-8 SATA model also offers a 90-degree version, designed for high-density chassis. Each cable has individual and overall foil-and-braid multi-layer shielding matched to 24Gbps frequencies, all wrapped in low-loss, high-flex PVC jackets.

Application

SFF-8654 cables are the backbone of next-generation, high-performance storage infrastructure. They are primarily used to connect 24Gbps SAS 4.0 or NVMe-oF HBAs/RAID controllersto the drive backplanes in both All-Flash Arrays (AFA) and NVMe JBOFs (Just a Bunch of Flash). The need for maximum throughput in AI/ML training clusters and HPC storage nodes makes the 8i series, with 2× doubled bandwidth, a must-have. Single breakout cables (to SATA) allow modern controllers to connect to large pools of high-capacity SATA SSDs. SFF-8087, SFF-8643, and SFF-8639 (U.3) adapters will enable phased infrastructure upgrades and the use of NVMe/SAS dual-port drives. The SFF-8644 cables are also used for high-speed external expansion and are indispensable in broadcast and media workstation 8K+ video editing storage, as well as storage test/development labs.

Quality & Testing

Because of the extreme 24Gbps data rates, every SFF-8654 cable goes through an exhaustive, multi-phase validation process. This includes 100% continuity and functional testing per lane (4 or 8 lanes). One vital part of this process is Signal Integrity Validation, in which Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) testing measures insertion loss, return loss, and crosstalk to verify that the design meets the stringent SFF-8654 specification when operating at 24Gbps. Mechanical durability is evaluated via batch testing for latch engagement cycles (a few thousand insertions) and cable flex life. All raw materials are RoHS- and REACH-compliant, and each production lot is tested for EMI shielding efficacy. Physical and electrical parameters for compliance with the SFF-8654 specification are stringently verified.

How to Install the SFF-8654 SAS Cable?

Power Down and Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Safety

Now shut down the server and storage completely. You must wear an ESD wrist strap when handling components, especially static-sensitive 24Gbps HBAs and drives.

Find Ports & Route Plan

Find the SFF-8654 (4i or 8i) port on your HBA/RAID card. Determine the destination port(s) (SATA or SFF-8087). Avoid sharp bends, pinch points, or anything that would obstruct airflow through and/or around the connect.

Connect Controller End

Use the SFF-8654 connector on your controller. The connector has a keying feature to ensure correct orientation. Make sure you pressed it down evenly and firmly until you hear an audible click sound from the latch, confirming a firm connection. Avoid applying excessive force.

Connect Target End(s)

  • For SATA Breakout
  • Attach each clearly numbered SATA connector to its corresponding drive, ensuring that the latch—if present—is fully engaged. For the 8i to 8 SATA, keep that cable bundle nice and tidy.
  • For SFF-8087/8639/8643/8482/8644
  • Insert the cable into its respective port, then click the positive-click latch to complete the secure connection.

SFF-8482 Molar Power

And the SFF-8482 to the drive and a 4-pin Molex connector to an open psu cable for power.

Cable Management

This involves routing and securing the cables neatly into cable management brackets to minimize strain against any connectors, using things like chassis tie-downs. Use a separate conduit for the 24Gbps cables, if possible, to avoid tightly bundling them with power cables, which could cause electromagnetic interference.

Power On & Initialize

After all connections are secured, please switch on the system. Enter the HBA/RAID controller (e.g., LSIutil or vendor-specific GUI) to make sure all attached drives are detected and functioning at the correct link speed, e.g., 24Gbps or 12Gbps

User Experience

Our SFF-8654 cables offer reliable, plug-and-play compatibility with next-gen HBAs from Broadcom and Microchip, as reported by system integrators and engineers working with these state-of-the-art storage platforms. The build quality also deserves a shout-out; the precision of the Slimline connector and positive action of the latch are essential for 24Gbps link stability. The 4i and 8i variants, as well as the “from 8i to both SFF-8644s” cable, are often praised for addressing specific high-bandwidth design needs that off-the-shelf cables cannot meet. During all-flash array validations, users verify that there are no link training errors or dropouts, and that cables perform reliably at full 24Gbps speeds. In addition, the clear lane and channel numbering found on complex breakout cables is considered handy for installation in tight 1U/2U servers. Feedback casts these cables as important, decorator-grade elements in the future of SAS 4.0 and NVMe-oF infrastructure deployments.

SFF-8654 4i and 8i, what is the difference?

The 4i has four data lanes and is commonly used to connect four SATA drives or one x4 NVMe/SAS target, similar to the SFF-8643. The 8i, on the other hand, features eight data lanes—effectively doubling the bandwidth. This enables connectivity for up to eight SATA drives, two 4-lane targets (via two SFF-8087 ports), or lane aggregation for a single high-bandwidth device.

Do SFF-8654 cables work with NVMe (U.3) drives?

Yes. The SFF-8654 connector supports PCIe signaling for NVMe over Fabric. Our SFF-8654 4i-to-SFF-8639 cable is intended to connect a U.3 (SFF-8639) dual-port NVMe/SAS drive, while the 8i-to-dual SFF-8639 cable connects two such drives.

Are the cables themselves backwards compatible with SAS 3.0 (12Gbps) or SATA?

Yes. Electrically, they are all fully backward compatible. Depending on the type of connected device (e.g., SAS 3.0 or SATA III), an SFF-8654 HBA will negotiate down to that speed. This compatibility is aided by our breakout cables to SATA or SFF-8087/8643.

What is the purpose of this cable, and what are its ends?

This cable connects a server with an 8-lane SFF-8654 external port to two independent external JBODs with SFF-8644 ports. In fact, it splits one high-bandwidth external port into two to gracefully expand the end-user connectivity.

What is the maximum length where reliable 24Gbps operation can be achieved?

For 24Gbps performance, we recommend no longer than 1 m. Longer lengths remain possible for 12Gbps or lower speeds. 0.5m and 0.7m options come as standard, targeted for dense server scenarios.

SAS or SATA drives with a Molex on the SFF-8654 to SFF-8482?

In general, it is designed for SAS drives with the SFF-8482 interface. A standard SATA drive will not connect to an SFF-8482 port without an interposer, even though the drives are electrically compatible.

Is it OK to mix SAS and SATA drives together on the same 8i-to-8 SATA cable?

A SAS controller can talk to both SAS and SATA drives, but it’s not really standard practice to mix them up on the same cable or port if you’re trying to build a single storage volume, and support for such a thing from the controller itself can be hit-or-miss. Check your HBA doc for the exact process.

What is the minimum order quantity(MOQ)?

Our regular MOQ is 100 pcs per SKU. Paring plan for mixed-SKU orders + strategic partnerships

If 24Gbps validation is required, can you provide samples?

Yes, we offer samples to eligible B2B customers for compatibility and performance testing on target hardware.

Are you able to configure the SATA connector angles on 8i breakout cables?

Absolutely. We are an OEM customization manufacturer. And we can make cables with any required angle of the SATA connector (down, left, right, or up), depending on your chassis layout.

What do I need to know before buying an SFF-8654 SAS cable?

This cable is the optical data bus for 24Gbps SAS 4.0 and NVMe over Fabric (NVMe-oF) systems. It drives all-flash arrays, AI/ML training clusters, and enterprise storage servers. Choosing poorly can result in incompatible failures or even signal integrity problems at 24 Gbps speeds, for a product that occupies valuable rack real estate. With data through October 2023, this professional handbook enables you to navigate what really matters — the key technical and practical criteria to consider — so you can ensure the SFF-8654 cable fits your application as closely as possible for performance and return on investment.

  1. Choose Between Lane Configuration: 4i or 8i
The primary difference is between the SFF-8654 4i (4-lane) and SFF-8654 8i (8-lane). 4i variant is the default for a single connection to a 4-lane target, which would be a U.3 (SFF-8639) dual-port drive or a backplane with four SATA drives. The 8i variant is, instead, half the name above, touting double the bandwidth in two cases: draping up to eight individual SATA/SAS drives off a breakout cable or aggregating lanes to maximum throughput to a single high-performance storage controller or expander. Choose the wrong lane count and you’ll either bottleneck your performance or leave expensive HBA ports underutilized.
  2. Map Exactly Your Target Device and Connector
After determining the number of lanes, we need to identify the physical interface used by our connected device. Your HBA has an SFF-8654 port; the other side needs to be compatible with your storage hardware. Is connectivity to an existing legacy 12Gbps SFF-8087 or SFF-8643 backplane required for an upgrade path? Do you use the newest U.3 NVMe/SAS drives (which need an SFF-8639 cable)? Or does your need have a high-density breakout for 4 or 8 SATA SSDs/HDDs? You will need an SFF-8654 to SFF-8644 cable for external connectivity to a 12Gbps JBOD. Failing to correctly identify the target connector results in costly and time-consuming mistakes.
  3. Signal integrity and build quality validation for 24Gbps
Not every SFF-8654 cable is guaranteed to reliably support 24Gbps signals. Above this frequency, ensuring signal integrity becomes critical. Look for cables from manufacturers that list SAS 4.0 (24Gbps) and NVMe compatibility and use high-quality materials – including high-temperature LCP connectors, multi-layer individual/overall shielding (foil + braid), and gold-plated contacts. It should be strong enough not to disconnect from a mobile machine operating in a harsh-vibration environment. Flexibility with a slim profile is also important for cables that will be pulled into tight spaces in 1U/2U servers, such as our SFF-8654 8i to 90-Degree 8 SATA.
  4. Consider Application-Specific Features and Length
Evaluate your specific deployment needs. Right-angle or 90-degree connectors (such as SATA breakouts) are often required in ultra-dense all-flash arrays to avoid obstructions from neighboring components. A power-delivery-capable cable, such as an SFF-8654-to-SFF-8482 (Molex) cable, would ease cabling for test benches or direct-attach scenarios. Select the minimum cable length that permits strain-free, tidy routing with no excess slack; for 24Gbps performance, shorter lengths (0.5m, 0.7m) are usually preferable to longer runs to reduce serial signal attenuation.
  5. Work with a certified Manufacturer to achieve B2B goals
For enterprise infrastructure, you need to buy from a specialist manufacturer, not a general distributor, and certainly not an anonymous faceless manufacturer. A partner like Bespokecable: an ISO 9001:2015-certified factory with over 20 years of experience, gives you peace of mind for quality, reliable specs, and compliance (CE, RoHS). When it comes to B2B procurement, offerings that leverage competitive bulk pricing, full OEM/ODM customization for special angles or lengths, and quick sample programs are priceless. They make sure the cable works on day one and is integrated into your supply chain and product life. A good cable from a technical partner protects your larger investment in servers, HBAs, and costly NVMe/SAS drives.
