D-Sub Male vs Female Connectors: A Practical Buying Guide

For D-Sub connectors, gender depends on the contacts: pins are male, and sockets are female. This simple definition gets confusing when buying because people may refer to the equipment port, the cable end, or the outer shell. Specify each cable end independently.
DB9 IDC Connector: Insulation displacement connector with DB9 pinout for direct ribbon cable termination without soldering.

Male means pins; female means sockets

Look at the electrical contacts, not the shape of the surrounding shell. A male D-Sub uses pin contacts; a female D-Sub uses socket contacts.

This terminology should be written directly on the cable drawing for End A and End B. Avoid phrases such as ‘normal DB9 end’ because they force the supplier to guess the intended gender.

Describe the cable, not only the equipment

If the equipment has a female port, the mating cable end will normally be male. When a buyer says ‘I need a female cable’ while pointing to a female machine port, the order can easily be reversed.

A good RFQ therefore lists both the equipment interface and the required cable-side connector. Photos are useful when the buyer is uncertain.

Gender combinations are application-specific

D-Sub cable assemblies can be male-to-female, male-to-male, or female-to-female. None of these combinations alone tells you whether the cable is straight-through, crossover, or proprietary.

Treat connector gender and pinout as separate fields. A gender changer can solve a mechanical mismatch but cannot correct an electrical mapping.

Panel and bulkhead assemblies need one more check

For panel-mounted cables, specify which side of the panel the connector faces and how it is secured. The same contact gender can be packaged in different mounting arrangements.

Check the available space for screw locks, hood, or overmold and the mating connector. Mechanical access is part of compatibility.

How to write the RFQ line

A useful description looks like: End A connector + contact count + gender + hardware; End B connector + contact count + gender + hardware; followed by the approved pinout and cable construction.

This is clearer than a long product nickname and gives the supplier fields they can check one by one.

Questions buyers ask when the name is not enough

How do I tell D-Sub male from female?

Male has pin contacts; female has socket contacts.

Does male-to-female mean straight-through?

No. Gender does not define the wiring.

Can I change gender with an adapter?

Mechanically, adapters can change the mating interface, but you still need to verify the electrical mapping and hardware.

Related decisions to resolve

Use the how-to identify a D-Sub connector to confirm the first related decision, then review the D-Sub pinout guide before you freeze the order.

Turn identification into a buildable specification

When you ask BespokeCable to review this type of assembly, send the connector photos or part numbers, the mating orientation, and the equipment drawing or approved sample. BespokeCable’s published custom workflow starts with requirement discussion and specification approval, so the connector name is treated as an input rather than the complete design.

Send the interface evidence, not only the connector name

Send BespokeCable your equipment models, connector details for both ends, approved pinout or verified sample, finished dimensions, shielding and mechanical requirements, quantity, and sample-approval criteria. You can then review a defined assembly instead of relying on a generic D-Sub description.
